Weekend Schools
All core modules and most elective modules have a weekend workshop that we refer to as a Weekend School. Tutors and students regard these workshops as extremely valuable since they provide an opportunity to exchange ideas, clarify concepts and applications, and bring all the components of the module together.
We have always had a policy of deducting marks for non-attendance at weekend schools. However, this policy has been often ignored. This created great resentment in students who did attend the weekend schools since the schools are demanding of time and energy, particularly for those students who travel to Sydney from other cities. Therefore the Advisory Board of Studies, with the strong support of the Student representatives on the Board resolved as follows:
Attendance at weekend schools and telephone tutorials is a required activity. The roll will continue to be called at telephone tutorials but no penalty shall apply for non-attendance. Students missing a weekend school for whatever reason shall lose 20 marks from their final aggregate mark out of 100. These 20 marks shall be restored if the student submits an additional assignment that is assessed as satisfactory. The restoration of deducted marks shall thus be all or none: if the assignment is judged satisfactory, all marks shall be restored; if not satisfactory, the penalty shall stand.
From the minutes of Advisory Board of Studies, December 11, 2001.
Please note the above policy. It will now be enforced rigorously.
At every Weekend School you will be asked to sign an attendance sheet. Please make sure you do this to confirm your attendance. One of the difficulties with distance education is that tutors have little time to get to know you face to face, and where class sizes are big they cannot rely on memory to confirm your attendance.
